SYCHAR EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH VOTES TO LEAVE THE ELCA.
On May 23rd, 2010 Sychar Lutheran held the second constitutionally required congregational vote to ratify the January decision to sever ties with the ELCA. The resolution was ratified. Sychar Evangelical Lutheran Church has hereby disaffiliated herself from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
There was some temporary puzzlement as we had 99 sign the attendance roster, and 101 votes cast.
Update: Both the NE MN Synod Bishop and the office of the Secretary of the ELCA concur that the vote is valid. We had 101 ballots cast and 101 registered members - some confusion resulted because of simply having miscounted the the registered names on the sign in sheets.
71 Yes votes, 30 No votes. 70.29% achieved the super majority of the required 67%.
Pastor Robin K. Bjella has resigned from the roster of the ELCA. On June 9th she was fully certified through the registration, essay and interview process of LCMC; (Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ) - the fourth largest Lutheran denomination in the U.S.
